The mighty Pentland Firth
The Pentland Firth, often described as the ‘Saudi Arabia of Tidal Power,’ is a globally significant resource. Its fast, consistent tidal flows create the ideal environment for large-scale energy generation, with the potential to deliver secure, low-carbon electricity to the UK and beyond. This unique setting has already attracted international developers who view Caithness as the natural location to scale up commercial projects.
The flagship example is MeyGen, the world’s largest planned tidal stream array, located in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth. Turbines installed here are already exporting electricity to the national grid, demonstrating not only technical feasibility but also commercial viability. The project is proof that Caithness can deliver pioneering developments at scale, backed by strong government and industry confidence.
Key figures
North Highland is leading the transition to a low carbon economy.
Currently produced by MeyGen
MeyGen is the largest operational tidal array in the world, producing enough capacity to power 7,000 homes annually.
potential capacity
MeyGen has consent for up to 86 MW of capacity and the potential to expand to around 398 MW.
Battery storage
MeyGen has now received consent for its Battery Energy Storage (BES) project, marking an important next step in the evolution of the world’s largest tidal stream array in the Pentland Firth. The consent enables MeyGen to pair predictable tidal generation with energy storage, helping to balance supply and demand and strengthening the case for tidal power as a reliable component of the future energy system.
For North Highland, the BES project brings clear benefits: increased grid flexibility, greater resilience for renewable generation, and further long-term investment in the local energy ecosystem. It reinforces the region’s position at the forefront of marine renewables while supporting jobs, skills, and supply-chain opportunities linked to next-generation clean energy infrastructure.
