JGC was one of several local companies to benefit from Focus North’s fully-funded Net Zero Nation Accelerator programme, supporting SMEs to create meaningful carbon reduction plans. Here, Alan Miller and Ellie Mackay explain the benefits
Why did you sign up for Net Zero Nation?
We’d already been working on our carbon footprint and net zero programme for about three years, but it was self-taught, based on government guidance. We knew we were doing things properly, but when Net Zero Nation came along, their presentation was far more professional. Nearly every client asks for our net zero plan, so it was important to have something clear and credible. Joining gave us comfort that what we were doing was on the right track, and it helped us present it in a way that matched client expectations.
How did you find the course?
The programme streamlined everything. Before, we were gathering data once a year, which was time-consuming. Net Zero Nation suggested a monthly spreadsheet, and that’s made it much easier and less stressful. Being in a group with other local businesses was valuable too. Everyone was at different stages, but we could share ideas and learn from each other.
How did it change your mindset towards your business and carbon footprint?
It confirmed that we’d made good progress already, but it also highlighted areas we hadn’t thought about. We’d done the easy wins — LED lighting, heating changes, reducing waste — but the programme made us look harder at vehicles, workshops and longer-term reductions. For example, we’d planted 1,000 trees four years ago, and we can now count that in our reporting. We also achieved our first full month of 100% recyclable waste, with nothing going to landfill, which was a big milestone. It’s shifted our mindset to think beyond compliance and really embed sustainability in how we work.
What’s next on your net zero journey?
We need to look seriously at electric and hybrid vehicles and at ways of making our workshops more efficient. It’s not always easy in a rural area, with limited infrastructure, but the technology is improving. We’re also planning to engage more with our suppliers on carbon reduction, which is an important next step.
What advice would you offer other businesses starting out on their carbon reduction plan?
Don’t wait. Clients are increasingly demanding net zero plans in tenders, and if you don’t have one, you risk losing business. Net Zero Nation gives you the tools and structure to make it manageable, and it shows clients you’re serious. It’s worthwhile, it saves money, and it helps you win work.
