Caithness Jobs and How to Get Them returns next week, linking local talent with employers from across the region. Neillian Rodger, Social Value Coordinator at Murphy, explains why it’s one of the highlights of her working year.
Last year, I had the opportunity to attend the Caithness Jobs and How to Get Them event with my employer Murphy. It was an incredibly busy and vibrant day that brought together people from every corner of the Caithness community. What struck me most was the diversity of the attendees: young people exploring their first career steps, those considering a change of direction, and others curious about what the future holds for the region.
One thing was clear throughout the day: people were eager for meaningful information about the opportunities that Pathway to 2030 and the growth of renewable energy will bring to Caithness. There was a real sense of anticipation around how these developments could reshape local careers and create long‑term benefits for the community.
What made the event truly memorable was how open, warm, and engaged everyone was. Conversations flowed easily, with people genuinely keen to understand what skills will be needed in the years ahead. To help spark those discussions, we brought a hands‑on activity: building a tower using cocktail sticks and marshmallows. It was a simple idea, but a brilliant icebreaker – as you’ll see from the fun I’m having in the photo below.
People of all ages got involved , laughing, competing, and getting creative. The activity wasn’t just fun; it opened the door to talk about important skills like teamwork, communication, problem‑solving, and resilience. It set exactly the right tone for deeper conversations about future jobs within the renewable energy sector.
Now, a year on, we’re excited to be returning to the event once again. And this time, we’re bringing even more.
Connecting with the community
As our projects gather momentum and move into new stages of delivery, we’re proud to have opened a new office in the area, strengthening our local presence and deepening our commitment to Caithness. Alongside this, we have an even broader range of opportunities to share: opportunities that are becoming more tangible, more defined, and more relevant than ever for people across the region. We’re looking forward to reconnecting with the community, sparking more conversations, and helping people understand how they can be part of the region’s evolving future.
Events like these remind me of the potential and pride within Caithness. If the enthusiasm we saw last year is anything to go by, this year promises to be even more inspiring. A huge thank‑you to the event organisers, whose hard work, planning, and passion make this event such a success year after year. Their commitment creates a welcoming space where people can learn, explore opportunities, and shape their future careers.
