Caithness has secured renewed funding for PSO flights from Wick John O’Groats Airport, maintaining links with Aberdeen and adding a new service to Glasgow.

In our recent blog on regional infrastructure, we highlighted the importance of the transport, energy and digital networks that underpin economic growth. Reliable air links are an important part of that picture, helping businesses connect with customers and suppliers, supporting inward investment, and ensuring our communities remain well connected to the rest of Scotland.

The renewed PSO secures these vital lifeline services while expanding the airport’s reach with a direct connection to Glasgow alongside the established Aberdeen route. Together, these services provide greater flexibility for business travel, easier access to national transport connections, and improved options for residents and visitors alike.

This investment comes at an important time. As major opportunities continue to emerge across energy, marine, tourism, space and conservation, connectivity becomes increasingly important. Businesses considering investment in the North Highlands need confidence that people can travel efficiently to and from the region, while local companies need dependable links to markets, partners and clients across Scotland and beyond.

Infrastructure investment

The additional Glasgow service also complements the wider programme of infrastructure investment taking place across the region. Improvements at our ports, continued investment in road and digital networks, and the development of strategic energy infrastructure are all helping to create the conditions for long-term economic growth. Strong regional air connectivity forms an important part of that wider picture.

The success of our PSO service is testament to close partnership working in our region. Set against a backdrop of uncertainty across the aviation industry and government budgets, the increased investment from Highland Council and Transport Scotland reflects the lifeline nature of the route and the value it delivers for businesses and communities.
