It was incredible to attend test trials for the Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE) flights at Wick John O’Groats Airport in October.
The ARC C-600 autonomous aircraft, featuring an advanced fixed winf design and electric take-off and landing capabilities, eliminates the need for a traditional runway.
This autonomous electric aircraft makes for an ideal solution, supporting logistics services, marine industries and windfarms. Such progress in electric propulsion systems is propelling us towards a more environmentally-friendly aviation industry.
SATE brings together an international consortium of industry partners, public sector bodies and academia, who will work with regional businesses and stakeholders to apply state-of-the-art aviation technology to deliver targeted economic growth.
Celebrating a UK first
The Orkney-based project has the potential to provide a blueprint for achieving Net Zero regional aviation throughout the UK. Additionally, it proudly celebrates its success as the UK’s first low-carbon aviation test centre and the first successful test flight of an unmanned aircraft of its size in Europe.
The Highlands and Islands represent an ideal ‘living lab’ for emergent aviation technologies, demonstrating their practical applications in addressing connectivity challenges, as well as creating an emerging new sector with significant job creation potential.
